Polyaspartic vs Epoxy Flake for Melbourne Garages
Melbourne garages cop UV through open roller doors, hot tyres off the freeway, oil drips and winter wet. Homeowners often ask whether they need epoxy flake or polyaspartic. For a working garage, the honest answer is usually both: Epoxy Flake as the build, polyaspartic as the UV-stable clear. Concrete To Style does not install metallic epoxy. This is not a sales page restating the homepage. It is a system comparison for Greater Melbourne slabs.
What people mean by "epoxy flake"
Epoxy Flake is a decorative chip system. Pigmented epoxy goes onto a diamond-ground slab, vinyl flake is broadcast into the wet film, then a clear locks the chips in. The flake hides patches, tyre marks and old paint scars. Texture underfoot helps when you walk in from the rain. A thin roll-on kit from a hardware aisle is not this job. Prep, film build and a proper broadcast decide whether the floor lasts. See Garage Epoxy Flooring Melbourne (/garage-epoxy-flooring-melbourne) for garage-specific context, and Epoxy Flooring (/services/epoxy-flooring) when a solid colour (no flake) is a better fit.
What polyaspartic actually does
Polyaspartic is a fast-cure aliphatic coating. On Melbourne garages we use it as a clear topcoat, not as a substitute for grinding. It stays clearer in sunlight than a standard epoxy clear, and it lets you get the car back in sooner than a slow epoxy-only stack. Sun through a west-facing door will amber a cheap epoxy clear. That is why the garage package uses UV-stable polyaspartic over the flake, not an epoxy clear left to yellow.
The CTS garage build (not a menu of mystery extras)
For a sound standard double garage the live package is two coats of pigmented epoxy, a full flake broadcast (the whole slab, not a light sprinkle), then two coats of polyaspartic clear. Typical time on site is 2-3 days. That system is spelled out on Double Garage Epoxy (/double-garage-epoxy). A standard double garage starts from $2,199 incl. GST. Single, triple, oversized or damaged slabs are quoted after we see the floor. We do not publish a fake per-square-metre rate here.
UV: why the clear coat matters more than the chips
Flake colour is chosen from the live colours chart (/colours). The chips sit in the epoxy. The two polyaspartic clears are what take the Melbourne sun, hot-tyre scuff and cleaning chemicals. Skip the UV-stable clear and the floor can chalk or amber where the door sits open. That is the practical difference between "epoxy flake only" and "epoxy flake with polyaspartic".
When flake is not the answer
Grind & Seal keeps more of the concrete look with a thinner sealed film. It can suit some interiors or a budget tidy-up, but it is not the dirt-hiding garage finish most households want. Driveway Resurfacing is for the driveway in sun and rain, not a substitute for a garage flake build. Outdoor slabs need a different texture and UV approach than a lock-up. If you want a seamless colour with no chips, that is Epoxy Flooring (/services/epoxy-flooring), not flake.
Prep still decides the outcome
Diamond grind, crack repair and a dry slab come first. Fast-cure polyaspartic is not a shortcut around prep. Peel after a summer is almost always a prep or moisture problem, not a brand-name problem. We work Melbourne and Victoria only, based in Clyde, VIC 3978. 15+ years, APC Platinum installer, 1856+ projects.
