Preparing your garage for epoxy flooring: a Melbourne homeowner checklist

Getting a garage epoxy floor goes more smoothly when the details are sorted before anyone arrives. This checklist covers what to send with your enquiry, what to tell us about the slab, how to get the garage ready, and which timings to confirm with your installer.
1. Details and photos to send with your enquiry
Include your suburb, a rough floor area (length by width is fine) and whether it is a single, double or larger garage. Send a few clear photos: one wide shot of the whole floor from the doorway, close-ups of any cracks, stains, patches or flaking, and a photo of how the garage is accessed from the street. If your garage is new, say so; our new home garage package covers new builds. For established homes, our garage epoxy flooring Melbourne page explains the options.
2. Tell us about the existing slab and any coating
Useful questions to answer: Has the floor been painted, sealed or coated before? Are there oil or chemical stains? Are there cracks, chipped edges or earlier repairs? Does the floor get damp or show white powdery marks? Do water or leaves come in under the door? You do not need to know the answers exactly; photos and a quick description help us judge how much preparation is likely before we assess the floor in person. Expansion joints are left open rather than coated over.
3. Clear the garage and plan access
We do not move furniture, vehicles or stored items, so the floor needs to be completely empty before we start. Plan where boxes, bikes, tools, shelving and the fridge will go, and check the driveway gives clear access for equipment. Let us know about anything fixed to the floor, anything that cannot be moved, and whether there is power available in or near the garage.
4. Organise parking and household access
Your cars will need to stay out of the garage during the work and for a period afterwards, so arrange street or driveway parking in advance and check any local parking rules. If the garage is your usual way in and out of the house, plan another entry. Think about pets and children too, and let neighbours know if the driveway will be busy.
5. Ask for your actual installation and return times
Before booking, ask your installer how long the job will take on your floor, when you can walk on it and when you can drive on it. Installation time and return-to-use time are separate, and both depend on the specified system and site conditions. Get the answers for your floor in writing and plan the household around them.

Our Ringwood double garage project shows a 40 m² garage that had full grinding and crack patching before a complete epoxy flake system in a Pipeline Grey base with Flint flake.
For a sound standard double garage up to approximately 36 m², see our double garage epoxy flooring page (from $2,199 incl. GST; other sizes and extra preparation are quoted).
