Concrete Surface Preparation Melbourne - Grinding, Levelling and Coating Prep
What proper preparation looks like on a Melbourne slab
Every floor finish we install across Melbourne and Victoria stands or falls on the slab beneath it. Our surface preparation service opens the concrete with planetary diamond grinders to an open, contaminant-free profile, so adhesives, levelling compounds, epoxy coatings and sealers can genuinely bond instead of sitting on a sealed skin. We level high spots, cut down ridges between pours and flatten trowel marks that would otherwise telegraph through tiles, vinyl planks or timber parquetry. Tile adhesive, carpet glue, paint and failed coatings are mechanically stripped back to sound concrete, and where a resin or coating is going down next we leave the correctly keyed profile - a “key grind” matched to what the next trade or system actually specifies.
Cracks and control joints are assessed and repaired before any finish goes down, and we check moisture and contamination on site rather than guessing over the phone - a damp or contaminated slab will push even a quality coating off within months, which is exactly why epoxy floors fail in Melbourne. Where the slab itself is the intended finish rather than a substrate, our Grind & Seal and Polished Concrete services take the same preparation through to a finished concrete floor.
All grinding runs on dust-extracted machines with HEPA-class vacuums, so occupied Melbourne homes, tenanted shops and live Victorian worksites stay clean while we work. Scope and price are confirmed after a free on-site assessment, because slab condition, access and the finish you have chosen all change the answer. Why do I need surface preparation before new flooring?
Tiles, vinyl, timber and coatings all fail when the slab underneath is uneven, contaminated or smooth. Proper grinding, levelling and key prep gives the new finish a sound, bonded base - which means it lasts longer and looks better.
Can you remove old tile glue or vinyl adhesive?
Yes. We mechanically remove tile glue, vinyl and carpet adhesives, paint and failed coatings using diamond grinding with dust extraction.
What is a 'key grind'?
A key grind is a light grind that opens up the surface of the concrete to create a profile, so epoxy, sealers or paint can properly bond instead of peeling off.
Can you repair cracks in my existing polished concrete?
Yes - we can fill and repair cracks in existing polished concrete floors. Please note cracks in a sealed grind-and-seal floor are harder to invisibly repair, and we'll be upfront about what's realistic before we start.
When is concrete grinding actually required?
Grinding is only needed when the slab is uneven, has high or low spots, or is contaminated with old adhesives or coatings. If your concrete is already flat, level and clean, we may only need a light key grind or cleaning. We assess each slab honestly and won't recommend grinding unless it genuinely improves the result.
What happens during the floor inspection?
We check the slab for level using professional measuring tools, look for contamination like old glue or paint, identify cracks or surface damage, and assess whether the surface is smooth or already keyed for bonding. Based on this, we give you a clear, honest recommendation of exactly what prep is needed and why.
Do you work with builders and flooring trades?
Absolutely. We regularly prep slabs for tilers, flooring installers, builders and renovators across Melbourne, on tight deadlines and to spec.
