Why Epoxy Floors Fail in Melbourne — Prep, Moisture and Thin Coats

When a Melbourne epoxy floor peels, bubbles or lifts in sheets, it is almost never “the tin”. The three causes we find on site are a skipped or shallow grind, moisture moving through the slab, and coats spread too thin to build a real film. Fix those three and the same products behave completely differently.

A skipped grind is the most common. A roll-on DIY kit or a rushed job over a sealed, laitance-covered slab has nothing to key into, so the basecoat sits on the surface like a sticker and comes away with the first hot tyre or scraped bin. Grinding opens the concrete so the epoxy can actually bond into it.

Moisture is the second. Slabs without a working membrane, garages below the driveway line, and floors that stay damp after rain will push vapour up under a coating until it blisters. We check the slab before quoting rather than after coating it. The third is film thickness - stretched product over a big floor gives a coat that wears through to bare concrete in the traffic lanes within a season.
